Pick-upPort of AkureyriThe meeting point for our tour is at the cruise terminal in Akureyri.
We cross the fjord and journey to our firsy destination. Your German-speaking guide will introduce you to North Iceland along the way.
1 Godafoss waterfallOur first stop is at Goðafoss Waterfall, not only a beautiful natural, but also a site of great cultural significance to the Icelandic people. Goðafoss translates to english as ´Waterfall of the Gods´- the name derives from a possibly true story of a powerful 10th century chieftain, who upon converting to Christianity cast his idols of the old norse gods in rapids here. Goðafoss thereafter came to represent the conversion of the Icelandic people at large.
The falls themselves are a crescent in shape, 12 meters high and 30 meters wide.The juxtaposition of the white foamy water against the stark black volcanic rock face makes for a great photo opportunity.
2 Lake Mývatn Craters / SkutustaðagigarLake Mývatn is Iceland´s fourth-largest lake, with numerous small islands dotting its surface. But it is the unusual pseudo-craters, or Skútustaðagígar, that really capture the eye.
These formations, alsp knowns as rootless craters, were not actually formed by eruptions from below, like actual volcanoes. Instead, they developed during an ancient volcanic event when flowing lava spread across the wetlands near the lake. The intense heat caused steam explosions beneath the surface, creating these distinctive crater-like shapes.
These mysterious crater add the unusual, other-wordly quality of the Mývatn landscape.
3 Dimmuborgir lava sculpturesOur next stop is to Dimmuborgir, where we take meandering walking paths through the lava fields which formed into dramatic structures and unuual shapes. These dramatic black lava sculptures make Dimmuborgir one of the north´s best attractions. The area formed in the same eruption as the Skutustaðirgigur craters, around 2300 years ago.
4 Námaskarð / HverirContinuing the volcanic theme, we visit Namaskard, also known as Hverir, where one can see the ongoing influence that geothermal activity has on the landscape here.
Namaskard is renowned for the eye-catching color of the rocks and ground, which can be attributed to the minerals in the ground. The area brims with boiling mud pots and the odour of sulphuric steam emanates from the earth.
