Itinerary
- Reykjavík Pickup
Our journey to Landmannalaugar takes 3-4 hours. We pass through Selfoss and Hella along the way, so pickup from these towns is possible as well. Our super-jeep has plenty of luggage capacity, so we recommend bringing a large pack to store most of your gear, as well as a smaller day-pack for hiking.
1 Day 1: LandmannalaugarDay 1 begins with our early morning departure from Reykjavík. It´s also possible to meet the tour at Selfoss or Hella.
We journey into the highlands reaching our destination at Landmannalaugar. We warm up for the exertions in the days to come, with an easy 8km hike through the Laugavhraun lava field passing stunning obsidian rock formations along the way. Trek by the famous colorful ryholite hills of Mt. Brennisteinelda, Grænagil gorge and Blæknúkur. Pass steaming geothermal pools and more along the way.
Tonight you will stay in the hut in Landmannalaugar. Take the opportunity while here is bathe and relax in the soothing on-site geothermal hot-springs.
Today´s hike: 8 km (4.9 mi) Walking time: 4 hrs Ascent: 470 m (1540′)
2 Day 2: Landmannalaugar to ÁlftavatnOur Laugavegur trail adventure begins! By far the longest day of our trek as we cover 24km in total. Departing from Landmannalaugr, we pass steaming hot-springs before hitting some challenging snow-covered sections as we approach the hut at Hrafntinnusker. This campground is windswept, desolate, and rather unwelcoming. We continue on ascending before a steep descent towards Alftavatn, full of technical zigzags and switchbacks. To reach our hut for the night, we need to cross some rivers, though they the water level is barely calf-high.
The color of the landscape varies wildly today, from ryholite red, to snowy water, to black sand, to the lush greens of Alftavatn. After a hard day´s hiking, enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our team.
Today’s Hike: 24 km (14.9 mi) Walking time: 7 hrs Ascent: 900 m (2952′)
3 Day 3: Álftavatn to EmstrurAfter yesterday’s exertions, the hike today is a welcome relief with few hills to tackle. We leave behind the greenery of Alftavatn and the landscape dramactically transfroms to a very flat, desert-like landscape. We do need to negotiate another couple of river crossings along the day. We pass by Stórasula and Hattafall volcanoes as we approach our hut for the night. If the skies are clear, you should be able to catch a glimpse of Myrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers to the far south.
Today´s Hike: 15 km (9.5 mi) Walking time: 6-7 hrs Descent: 40 m (130′)
4 Day 4 - Emstrur to ThorsmorkDay 4´s hike it longer and more challenging than day 3, but with spectacular views around each corner, your efforts will be well rewarded. The footbridge over the canyon about the Syðri-Emstruá river can be a little daunting for those scared of heights but it´s perfectly safe. Crossing this point marks yet another turning point in the landscape, and we enter the final distinct section of the Laugavegur trail. We descend towards the Almenningar gorge, with the vegetation noticeably, with birch trees prominent. One final river crossing sees you enter Þórsmörk, or Thor´s Woods.
Thorsmork is our base for the next two nights of our adventure.
Today´s Hike: 15 km (9.5 mi) Walking time: 6-7 hrs Descent: 300 m (985′)
5 Day 5: The Fimmvorduhals PassThe Fimmvorduls mountain pass is wonderous hiking trail that run between two glaciers; Myrdalsjökull and Ejyafjallajökull. Eyjafjallsjökull famously erupted in 2010. Two volcanic craters called Magni and Móði were created at this time, and reaching these craters are our goal for the day. The hike from Thorsmork is steep and challenging, especially as we negotiate a vertigo inducing and somewhat precarious section called “Kattahryggur”; the cat´s spine in English.
We will no doubt trek across some snow covered sections on this day.
It is popular to hike all the way to Skógar along this mountain, but we will instead return to the hut at Thorsmork after our adventure. The hike back down to Thorsmork features some of the most stunning views of the whole trip.
Hiking today: 16 km (10 mi) Walking time: 7-8 hrs Ascent: 800 m (2600′).
6 Day 6: Explore Thorsmork and return to ReykjavíkTake a short hike today with your guide, or go your own way on one of the many marked hiking trails. Or simply rest up and soak up the views. It´s up to you how you enjoy your final hours in this highland paradise.
We depart Thorsmork via our hardy super-jeep and begin our journey back to Reykjavík. We ford several rivers, and catch a glimpse of the famous waterfall, Seljalandsfoss along the way.
Distance: 6 km (3,5 mi) Walking time: 3 hrs.
