Landmannalaugar is one of the hidden gems of Iceland. Most visitors to our shores stick to more easily accessible regions such as the Golden Circle or the southern coastline. Landmannalaugar on the other hand involves a drive over bumpy gravel roads to access. Immerse yourself in the colorful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar, with an optional 1.5-2 hour guided hike to truly appreciate its otherworldly scenery.  This extra effort is well worth it for the astounding and unique landscapes that await you. Frequently Asked Questions
You can expect to spend up to four hours in Landmannalaugar Highland, give or take, depending on road conditions, weather, and overall group timing. It allows ample time for hiking in the surrounding trails and bathing in the natural hot spring. Guests who choose not to bathe can use this time to further explore the area and enjoy more hiking activity.
The hike in Landmannalaugar is rated as medium difficulty. It is suitable for travelers who are comfortable with moderate physical activity and enjoy a more active outdoor experience. The hike covers approximately 4.5 km and takes about 1.5–2 hours, with steady walking over uneven and sometimes rocky terrain. Some sections, particularly near the foothills of Bláhnúkur mountain, are slightly more technical but manageable for those in good physical condition. The guided route follows the Lauga Loop trail, passing through lava fields, colorful rhyolite hills, and steaming hot springs. If you prefer not to take part in the hike, you’re welcome to stay behind and explore the Landmannalaugar base area at your own pace, enjoying the unique surroundings and facilities before rejoining the group.
If you plan to bathe in the natural hot spring at Landmannalaugar, please bring a swimsuit and a towel. Basic changing facilities are available on-site for your convenience.
There is a small food van at the campsite, but prices tend to be high. We therefore recommend bringing a packed lunch, snacks, and drinks, which can be conveniently purchased during our comfort stops along the way.
The tour showcases some of Iceland’s most striking highland landscapes. Main stops typically include Hjálparfoss Waterfall, a unique double waterfall framed by basalt formations; Hnausapollur Volcanic Crater Lake, known for its vivid blue water set within a volcanic crater; and Landmannalaugar, famous for its colorful rhyolite mountains, hiking trails, and natural hot spring. The tour also includes a stop at Háifoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s tallest and most impressive waterfalls.
Yes. Our Landmannalaugar Highland Tour includes a visit to the dramatic waterfall location featured in the final episode of Stranger Things. The scene was filmed at Háifoss and its neighboring waterfall Granni, situated along the Fossá River in southern Iceland. Rising approximately 122 meters (400 feet), Háifoss is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, plunging into a vast canyon shaped by volcanic and glacial forces. Beside it, Granni flows into the same gorge, creating a striking twin-waterfall panorama that formed the dramatic backdrop for the show’s finale. On this tour, you’ll stand in the very landscape seen on screen—an unforgettable blend of scale, raw nature, and cinematic atmosphere.
This tour is operated using a 4×4 bus, equipped to handle rough terrain, gravel roads, and river crossings, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey into Iceland’s remote highland areas.
