Landmannalaugar
Hot springs
Landmannalaugar (whose name translates to “the peoples pools”) is an area of geographical significance and immense beauty in the highlands of south Iceland. The mountains here are dense with a mineral called rhyolite which is what causes the dazzling array of colours that the area is well known for. The area is also host to a large number of geothermal pools which is where it gets its name from.
One of the first stops of the day is Hjálparfoss waterfall, one of Iceland´s most beautiful waterfalls, from there the tour continues through the amazing mountain range that surrounds the area and there we will find the water filled crater Ljótipollur (e. ugly puddle). In the heart of Landmannalaugar you have the chance to take a bath in a natural hot-spring, so please bring your swim suit and a towel because you don´t want to miss relaxing in the hot water and enjoying the surreal rhyolite mountains that surrounds you. (take a deep breath and enjoy) You can also do a short hike in the area. This is a unique chance to view a true natural wonder, where the colors in the mountains are breathtaking. After relaxing in the pool or a short hike the tour takes you to the queen of Icelandic volcanos, Mount Hekla. Yes we will drive up to a height of approx. 900 meters above sea-level to capture some astonishing views in all directions.
No matter what time of year it is, a journey to Landmannalaugar is always amazing.
Our day tour will begin with our fast and efficient pick up service, after which point we can whisk you out into the highlands to begin our adventure.
During the summer season you will see the multicoloured rhyolite mountains. These are well known for their dramatic lighting and vast array of colors, including yellow, pink, fluorescent green and purple, brown, black and white.
The area offers several shorter hikes in this stunning scenery, giving you a spectacular view of everything Landmannalaugar has to offer. You will also be stunned by old lava fields, inactive explosion craters, waterfalls and the unforgettable hot pool, so don’t forget your bathing suits and towel.
During the winter months, the whole area is covered in deep snow, giving it a truly magical feel. The way to Landmannalaugar is almost inaccessible, making this the ultimate super jeep tour, utilizing the vehicle to its’ full potential!
Once you get there, act like a local and take a dip in the hot pool, surrounded by banks of melting ice and snow. It will be a mix of hot and cold, and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
On a clear day Mt. Hekla will show herself to you. She is the most active volcano in Iceland and since the time of settlement, around 1000 years ago, Mt. Hekla has erupted numerous times blanketing Iceland with thick layers of ash and pumice. It is no wonder that early settlers in Iceland believed Mt. Hekla to be the gateway to hell! In the past few decades Mt. Hekla has erupted roughly every ten years, the last one in the year 2000, so she is slightly overdue!
Regardless of which time of year you decide to come you will be offered a visual treat.
Pick up from select locations and some great memories.
This is a long day and not many places where you can buy food, so make sure to pack enough snacks and a lunch box!
