Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach Tour From Djúpivogur Port

Designed with cruise ship visitors in mind, join us on this tour exploring Iceland´s south-east coastline, famed for glaciers, icebergs, and imposing mountains. Starting from Djúpivogur, a typical example of a a small Icelandic fishing village, our expert guides will introduce you to the remarkable natural wonders Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the ice speckled black sand Diamond Beach.
We travel south from Djúpivogur, enjoying the stunning coastline views, with the imposing presence of Vatnajökull glacier – the largest glacier in all our Europe – on our righthand-side all the way.
On arrival to the Glacier Lagoon we understand the influence that Vatnajökull has on its surrrounding. Great icebergs break off the glacier into the lagoon which lies on its southern tip. This makes for a stunning natural spectacle. We take time here to enjoy the beatiful views and vistas. The ice lingers here in the lagoon before eventually reaching the sea some 1.5km further south. Once it reaches the sea, it is often washed straight back ashore at the Diamond Beach. The contrast between the cyrstal ice and the dark sand is truly something to behold.
On the return journey to your port, we make one final stop at the photographer´s paradise at Hvalnes Peninsula. From this coastal plain, the stunning Eystrahorn mountain lingers to the north. The dramatic horn shaped peak of volcanic rock imparts a real sense of otherwordly grandeur.
This 7 hour shore excursion is scheduled according to the docking times of the ships in port, so you can rest assured you will be back in time for your ship´s call-time.

Djúpivogur PortOur departure times are tailored to fit your cruise times.
Out team will wait to greet you at Djúpivogur Harbour. Once everyone is aboards, we journey southwards, winding our way alongside stunning mountains and sea views.

1 Jökulsárlón Glacier LagoonIt is from Vatnajökull Glacier that the ice at the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach originates. Ice chunks, both large and small calve from the southern tip of the glacier into Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The massive glacier lies only a mile or so from the sea, though the icebergs and chucks meander lazily through the lagoon and can take weeks or month to reach the ocean.
In the meantime we get to enjoy the stunning views of the icebergs in the calm waters of the lagoon. The massive white bergs contrast wonderfully with the calm blue waters of the lagoon.

2 Diamond BeachThe Diamond Beach is one of Iceland´s most-beloved natural attractions. A favourite photo stop, this location also helps us further understand the life cycle of glacial ice. Once the icebergs, which were part of Vatnajökull, work their way through the glacier lagoon, they pass under the bridge and are swept out to sea, where they will eventually melt. But when the currents and tides are in our favour, they are first washed back ashore onto Fellsfjara beach. Sometimes thousands of chunks of ice are scattered throughout its desolute volcanic black sands.

3 Eystrahorn MountainWe have time for one more wonder! Eystrahorn is a gorgeous mountain with a distinctive horn-shaped peak. It towers over the tiny Hvalnes peninsula, where a lonely yellow lighthouse stands, ready to guide ships away from the rocky cliffs which are crashed upon by the relentless north-Atlantic waves.
Eystrahorn is a great spot to grab some photos or to just soak in the mountain and coastal surroundings.
Djúpivogur PortAfter Eystrahorn we journey back to Djúpivogur and drop you to the harbour with time to spare before your ship’s call time. We truly hope you will have enjoyed your time with our lovely guides and take wonderful memories onward with you.
