Iceland 2026 Total Solar Eclipse Day Tour

On August 12th 2026, at precisely 16:47, Iceland will experience a true once in a lifetime event – a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun, as viewed from earth, with its shadow turning day into night. For the first time since 1954, the path of the total eclipse will center over Iceland, with the western Snæfellsnes Peninsula affording perhaps the best chance to witness this rare celestial harmony. The whole ecplise will take two hours, with peak totality at 17.48.
BusTravel Iceland will be operating this tour on one day only – our itinerary is loose by design – we will seek out cloud free skies, whilst also taking in some of the spectacular natural scenery that this region offers. Highlights could include Mt. Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi, Djúpalónnsandur Black Sand Beach, Saxhóll Crater, and much more besides. But our main objective will, of course, remain the eclipse itself.
We expect this exclusive day tour from Reykjavík to be highly in demand, so we recommend booking well in advance to ensure your spot on our tour. As the next total solar eclipse in Iceland, will not occur until 2196 – this a true one time only opportunity.
The area where this totality is visible is usually only 100-160km. For the first time in 72 years, this event will be centered on Iceland. It will not occur year again until 2196! So this really is your only chance to experience this momumental event.

- 2026 Eclipse Tour
Flexibility is key when seeking the best viewing point for a total solar eclipse. We will look to avoid two things on our Iceland Eclipse tour; Cloud cover, and crowds. For the first we will consult the Iceland Met. Office’s cloud coverage forecast as well as local on the ground feedback. For the crowds, our expert local guides know great hidden gems and lesser traveled areas. We will do all we can to ensure a fun and science filled experience.
We will ensure we are in our viewing spot well in advance of the eclipse beginning at 16:47 – we hope that it will be in a beautiful location as well of course.
- Snæfellsnes sightseeing
Snæfellsnes in known as Iceland in minature – for good reason. It features glaciers, volcanic craters, black sand beaches and much more. It´s a relatively small peninsula, so we expect to be able to include stops to natural atttractions such as the famed Mt. Kirkjufell, Djúpalónssandur volcanic black beach and mor, prior the the begin of the eclipe around 16:47.
We do need to be flexible though of course, so no particular stops are guaranteed.
