Volcano & Puffins – ATV Tour From Heimaey in Westman Islands

Meet Eldfell and the Puffin – Vestmannaeyjar’s Legendary Pair
Join us for an unforgettable adventure as we take you off the beaten path on an ATV journey. Ride through volcanic landscapes shaped by raw nature and witness puffins in their natural habitat — the true icons of the islands.
Vestmannaeyjar is a land of dramatic contrasts — where fire meets feather. While many know it for the powerful volcanic eruption of 1973, this stunning archipelago also boasts the world’s largest puffin colony.
Feel the rush of the wind, take in the crisp Icelandic air, and soak up panoramic views as our expert guide shares tales of the islands’ rich history and hidden wonders. There’s truly no better way to discover the heart of Vestmannaeyjar.
We begin by heading south to see the famous Elephant Rock, one of the island’s most unique natural landmarks.
Next, we ride toward Stórhöfði, known for its sweeping views and strong winds. On clear days, you can see all the way to Surtsey, the southernmost island, formed by an undersea eruption in 1963.
At Stórhöfði, we take a short walk to observe puffins in their natural habitat. Watch them glide, land, and play while our guide shares fun and fascinating facts. This part of the tour is on regular roads.
Then it’s time for some off-road excitement! We drive through the lava fields to Prestvik beach, where the fishing boat Pelagus ran aground, and pass the landing site of Guðlaugur Friðþórsson, the hero of The Deep.
We continue through the Eldfell volcano and along the coast, soaking in unforgettable views.
This family-friendly tour is great for all experience levels. The ATVs are automatic and easy to drive. Drivers must have a license, and passengers must be 6 or older. Each ATV seats two.
Your guide will provide helmets, waterproof overalls, and gloves — just bring your sense of adventure!
