Forest Lagoon & Goðafoss Waterfall Tour from Akureyri

Experience the natural beauty of Goðafoss Waterfall and indulge in a luxurious spa experience at the Forest lagoon on this 5 hour shore excursion tour from Akureyri. Departing from Akureyri cruise terminal, our departures are tailored to your ship´s docking times. Depart Akureyri admiring the mountain and fjord views as you go.
Our first stop is at Goðafoss Waterfall, an impressive crescent-shaped cascade. Around 12 metres (39 feet) high and 30 metres (100 feet) wide, Goðafoss is situated on the Skjálfandafljót River. Its name translates as “Waterfall of the Gods” – legend has it that a powerful chieftain cast his pagon idols into the falls upon converting to Chistianity. The falls have therefore come to symbolise the Christianisation of Iceland as a whole. Admire these falls from from one of several viewing paltforms and persceptives. We also check out the smaller Geitafoss waterfall, situated just a few hundred metres downstream.
After a shore fjord photo stop, we come to Forest Lagoon – your tour ticket includes the Warm entrance tier ticket giving you access to all the lagoon´s pools, cold plunhes and saunas. While away a few hours in the geothermal infinity pool, enjoying spectacular mountain, fjord, and city views.
Return shuttle buses depart the Forest Lagoon at 15 minutes to the hour, every hour – so you can stay for a long or as short as you prefer.

AkureyriOur staff will be waiting at Akureyri Cruise terminal. Once everyone is onboard, we depart on our half-day adventure together.

1 Goðafoss WaterfallOur first stop is at Goðafoss waterfall. Serence and picturesque, it stands on the Skjálfandafljót river, a glacial river with its source at Vatnajökull glacier, Europe´s largest. Goðafoss is 30m wide and the water drops from a height of 12m to the basin below. The half-crescent shape of Goðafoss is striking and lovely.
Goðafoss translates as “Waterfall of the Gods” in English. It is named so, because legend has it that a prominent chieftan named Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, symbolically threw icons of pagan gods into the waters here. A lawmaker, this represented Iceland turning its back on the old norse gods, and instead turning to Christianity.
We also check out the often overlooked smaller falls of Geitafoss, a short ways down river from Goðafoss.

2 Akureyri viewpointWe travel back along the fjord towards Akureyi once more. We make a photo stop at a great vantage point where panoramic views Akureyri and Eyja fjord can be enjoyed. The perfect photo opportunity.

3 Forest LagoonPerched on a wooded hill across the fjord from Akureyri is the idyllic Forest Lagoon which offers a modern geothermal spa experience set. Enjoy panoramic fjord and city views from toasty warm infinity pools, try the cold plunge and check out the sauna. Forest Lagoon provides a tranquil setting in which to relax and recharge, combining contemporary design with Iceland’s natural elements.
