We offer a perfect 5 hour shore excursion introduction to the charms of this region.

Introducing our Grundarfjörður Shore Excursion

About Grundarfjörður

For most of the year Grundarfjörður is a sleepy little village with a ppulation of about 900 people. Worklife largely revolves around fishing centered on its downtoen harbour. In summer though the town springs to life with the arrival of cruise ships bringing enthusiastic travelers to the town and of course the surrounding nature highlights. It´s possible to cover a nice number of highlights in a half-day tour.

Highlights from our Snæfellsnes Shore Excursion from Grundarfjörður

Grundarfjörður

Mt. Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss

Kirkjufell

You will no doubt have seen this iconic peak as your cruise ship approached the docks in Grundarfjörður. Situated just a few miles west of town, this solitary peak rises dramatically along the northern coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often considered one of the most photographed mountains in the country, its name—“Church Mountain”—aptly reflects its elegant, steeple-like silhouette that seems almost sculpted against the sky.

At the mountain’s base lies the charming Kirkjufellsfoss, a series of gentle cascades that flow gracefully over rocky steps. Together, the mountain and waterfall create a perfectly balanced composition, especially when reflected in calm waters or framed by seasonal light—whether bathed in golden sunset hues, dusted with winter snow, or illuminated by the northern lights.

Djúpalónssandur Black Sand Beach

Djúpalónssandur

Though perhaps less renowned than its southern cousin Reynisjara, the black sand beach at Djúpalónssandur is no less dramatic. Towering cliffs and dramatic lava formations surround the beach, creating a wild, almost otherworldly atmosphere that feels both desolate and deeply captivating.

Scattered across the shoreline, you may notice twisted pieces of rusted metal – remnants of a British trawler sundered against the rocks here in 1948. These fragments serve as a quiet but powerful reminder of the dangers faced by brave fishermen and of Iceland’s long and enduring maritime heritage.

Lóndrangar Pinnacles

Lóndrangar Pinnacles

Another coastal stop, Lóndrangar are two towering basalt pinnacles that rise dramatically on the shore. Standing at approximately 75 meters and 61 meters in height, these striking formations are the weathered remains of an ancient volcanic crater, gradually sculpted over centuries by the relentless forces of wind and sea. Today, what once formed part of a larger volcanic structure has been reduced to these jagged sea stacks, creating a hauntingly beautiful silhouette against the Atlantic Ocean.

Beyond their geological significance, Lóndrangar also play an important ecological role. The steep cliffs provide an ideal nesting habitat for a variety of seabirds, which can often be seen circling overhead or perched along the rock faces.

Arnarstapi village and bird cliffs

Arnarstapi

Continuing the coastal theme, we stop at the idyllic little hamlet of Arnarstapi. Its dramatic cliffs are home to a wide variety of sea birds, including Arctic Terns, Guillemots and Fulmars. Puffins are also occassionally spotted here in the summer month. Take the meandering cliff trail for dramatic views of the cliffs and crashing white squals below.

Gatklettur sea arch and the statue of Baldur the troll offer further interesting photo opportunities.

Búðir Black Church

Búðir Black Church

Búðir´s black church is one of the most beautiful in Iceland. Dating from the mid-19th century, the church is built in the minimalist nordic tradtion,

But what makes this place special is the stunning landscape on which it rests – the contrast between the black church and nature is quite dramatic. This church is a popular subject for photographers and we take a short photo stop here for that reason
